Ways to Stop Snoring by Practicing a Simple Change in Lifestyle

To better understand how these changes in lifestyle can relieve your noisy nights, you should understand what causes snoring. When we are sleeping, air passes through our nose, throat and lungs without making significant noise. However, when the airflow is disrupted (due to congestion or a restriction in air passages), more pressure is exerted to force the air through the air passages. This increased pressure can cause soft tissue in the mouth or throat to vibrate, thus causing noise. The following lifestyle changes can help reduce these sounds.

1. Limit Alcohol Consumption. Alcohol causes the tongue and throat muscles to relax, which may result in snoring due to restricted airflow through your airways. In addition to alcohol, certain medications (such as sleeping pills) generally relax your muscles and make you more likely to snore.

2. Avoid Certain Foods. Certain milk products with a high fat content may cause mucus to form in your throat, increasing the likelihood of noise from vibrating tissue.

3. Stop Smoking. Smoking tends to weaken throat muscles and contributes to the formation of mucus. Weakened muscles and increased mucus can restrict your airways and contribute to snoring. A reduction in nighttime noise is just one of many benefits of stopping or reducing smoking.

4. Lose Weight/Exercise. Yes, here’s one more reason you should lose weight and participate in a regular exercise program. For many people, exercising and losing weight will usually reduce fatty tissue in the throat which reduces the vibration and noise generated by those vibrations. Also, reducing fatty tissue in the throat may lessen the pressure on your airways so that air flows more easily.

5. Develop a Regular Sleep Pattern. Maintaining a good sleep pattern will keep you well-rested and reduces snoring in many people. Set a schedule to go to bed at about the same time every night and get plenty of sleep. Lack of sleep and fatigue may contribute to night time noise.

In many cases, this condition is related to an underlying sleep disorder. In addition to the lifestyle changes discussed above, you should always consult a medical professional for advice that is specific to your condition. Your doctor may suggest additional ways to stop snoring that are specific to your situation.
